Now Viewing: jorougumoTag type: General A youkai from Japanese mythology with the upper body of woman and the lower half of a spider. A Jorougumo can also shapeshift into a human, similarly to how many youkai can. Jorougumo are very similar to the Greek Arachne in appearance, though differ in their stories. A popular tale involving the Jorougumo starts with a woodcutter resting by the Joren Falls in Shizuoka Prefecture only for webs to attach to his feet and attempt to drag him past the waterfall. He escaped only to return when he dropped his axe. He finds a beautiful woman who returns it to him, saying not to speak of what happened there. The story ends in different ways; one ending has the woodcutter getting drunk, telling people what happened, and falling asleep, presumably getting killed by the youkai. Another ending has the Jorougumo and the woodcutter fall in love, potentially living together by the falls despite their impossible physical differences. Because of their shapeshifting appearance into a beautiful woman and tales involving romance with humans, the Jorougumo displays similarities to other youkai, namely the Yuki_Onna.
