The series started as a trilogy of live action films, each with a different director, and was followed by two TV series that take place within the original films' canon. It also received a reboot in 2014 that retells the story of the original film. It has also been adapted into two more family friendly animated TV series as well as comics. The franchise is set in the near future of Detroit, United States. Detroit's police force is too underfunded and weak to stop the escalating crime rates and the city is on the brink of a complete economic collapse. Detroit's mayor signs a deal with the mega corporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP), allowing them to take over the Detroit police department. OCP will also be allowed to turn the ghettos of Detroit into an upscale and independent city-state called Delta City. OCP begins testing new robots that will act as the new law enforcers of the city, but with little success. Meanwhile, Alex Murphy, a new cop and a loving father, joins the Detroit police force and is partnered with the tough female cop Anne Lewis. The two are sent to catch a vicious gang led by the sadistic Clarence Boddicker, but things go horribly wrong when Murphy is cornered and suffers a gruesome demise at the hands of Boddicker and his gang. Murphy's corpse is retrieved and Murphy is chosen to be the first subject of OCP's new Robocop program, and OCP's scientists proceed to replace Murphy's body with cybernetics except for his brain, face, and part of his digestive system. Murphy, now reborn as Robocop, is given 3 primary directives: serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law. Robocop is put on the streets and proves to be the most effective police officer Detroit has ever had, but things grow more complicated for everyone when Robocop, against everyone's expectations, begins to remember who he really was. . . The concept for the original film was conceived when writer Edward Neumeier was talking with a friend while the two of them walked past a poster for Blade Runner. Neumeier asked his friend what that movie was about and his friend said it was about a cop hunting robots, which gave Neumeier the idea of a robot cop. Robocop's appearance was influenced by the British comic protagonist Judge Dredd, the Japanese toku series Uchuu Keiji Gyaban, and the Marvel Comics hero Rom. The original film was Dutch director Paul Verhoeven's major Hollywood breakthrough after previously directing many Dutch films. Verhoeven, composer Basil Poledouris, and Neumeier would later re-team for another ultra-violent satirical science fiction action movie, Starship Troopers. The various installments of the franchise alternate between being adult-oriented and family friendly. The first two movies, particularly the first, are extremely violent to the point that the first film's theatrical release slightly toned the violence down in order to secure an appropriate rating for a mainstream release. Verhoeven explained that he intended the violence to be so extreme that it became darkly comedic. An uncensored version was later released for home video. The series combines action with satire about consumerism and corporate corruption. The series is also frequently crossed over with fellow science fiction action franchise Terminator.
