It can also be considered Resident Evil 8 and the roman numeral for 8 is hidden in its title. Like its predecessor, it is a first person horror/shooter game and is a direct sequel that follows the same protagonist, Ethan Winters. It was released on May 7, 2021 for Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Stadia. It was directed by Sato Morimasa. The art direction was handled by Takano_Tomonori and the soundtrack was composed by franchise veteran Uchiyama Shusaku. The story was written by Antony Johnston. The game takes place three years after Resident Evil 7 and Ethan has settled down with his wife Mia. The two of them had just had a baby, Rosemary Winters, and it seems like the Winters family are finally going to have some peace after the previous trauma they experienced. That is, until a squad of armed men, led by series hero Chris Redfield storm the Winters household and gun down Mia. The Winters family are forcefully taken away in a van, but they are separated when it crashes. Ethan finds himself in the cold, and harsh winter of Romania, Transylvania. Rosemary has been captured by the Four Lords, four mutant lords who have been terrorizing the locals and serve under a figure regarded as the local god, Mother Miranda. Ethan sets out to rescue his baby daughter from the evil lords and end their reign over Romania. Whereas Resident Evil 7 based its aesthetic off of American Southern rural horror, this installment takes inspiration from gothic horror, particularly works like Dracula. The game was also inspired by previous Resident Evil installment, Resident Evil 4, and the game includes mechanics similar to said game such as a character that functions as a merchant. The game was a financial and critical success, selling over 10.5 million units by November 2024 and receiving generally positive critical reviews. It won Ultimate Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards in 2021, Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards in 2022, and Best VR / AR Game at the Game Awards 2023.
