It was his first serialized manga and established many of his trademarks such as a story with a melancholic tone that contrasts with moments of crude humor as comic relief, numerous references to films, and metafictional elements that explore how characters in-universe construct stories. It ran from April 18, 2016 to January 8, 2018 on Shounen Jump +, and much like his next manga Chainsaw Man, is one of the more graphic shounen manga to be released under said publisher. It is set in the distant future. Earth has entered a global Ice Age thanks to the machinations of the Ice Witch. The witch is one of the "Blessed," human beings who are blessed with super powers. The story follows Agni, a boy who is blessed with the power of regeneration. He is an orphan who takes care of his younger sister Luna who has a weaker version of Agni's powers. The two of them live a difficult life in a village where they are the youngest citizens, but as long as they have each other they still have hope. However, one day, a military group from a militarized city of Behemdorg enters the village looking for some supplies. The group is led by a Blessed name Doma, who has the power to create inextinguishable flames. Their arrival quickly turns hostile once Doma realizes that the villagers are all cannibals who have subsisted by Agni literally using his own body to feed them. Doma decides to destroy the village and every inhabitant is burned to death by his flames, except for Agni. Agni's regeneration abilities are so strong that Doma's flames are unable to kill him, but he lives everyday burning in unfathomable agony. After Agni gets used to his new body, he is inspired to live on soley to exact bloody vengeance on Doma for massacring his sister and fellow villagers. Agni embarks on his quest for vengeance across the snowy wastelands, accompanied by Togata, a fellow Blessed and a movie buff who feels Agni is the perfect star for Togata's dream film project.
